Basic Information
The European Commission has taken action to promote electric mobility by endorsing a unified connector standard. Back in 2013, they advocated for a standard and have now designated the IEC 62196 Type 2 connector (Type 2 Socket and Type 2 plug) as the official European standard for all electric vehicles and charging stations by 2025. This move aims to achieve seamless interoperability between various vehicles and charging stations, a goal that has not yet been fully realized.

Can Type 2 sockets be used for BEV and HPEV ?
A diagram illustrates the key differences between plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). PHEVs feature a gasoline engine, a small electric motor, and a battery, while HEVs include an electric motor and two batteries. Both types of vehicles can be recharged externally and can operate with zero tailpipe emissions, so the Electric Car Charging Type 2 Socket can used for both BEV and HPEV.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), commonly known as all-electric vehicles, rely solely on electricity and are powered by rechargeable battery packs that drive one or more electric motors. These vehicles must be charged from an external source. Most BEVs can cover at least 100 miles on a single charge, with newer models offering ranges between 200 and 300 miles or more. BEVs also include battery-powered buses like BEBs and ESBs.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are equipped with batteries that power an electric motor and can be recharged externally. However, they also have a smaller internal combustion engine that can either recharge the battery or, in some models, directly drive the wheels, extending the vehicle's range. PHEVs can typically travel between 20 to 50 miles on battery power alone, significantly cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions during regular short trips.
PHEVs generally consume 14 to 47 percent less fuel than traditional vehicles when their batteries are fully charged. In situations where electricity is unavailable, these vehicles can switch to conventional fuels like gasoline or diesel to keep running.
