Voltera, a US charge point operator, is enhancing its offerings by constructing two new charging hubs in California specifically for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. This initiative is part of their commitment to advancing zero-emission transportation.

The first charging hub will be situated in Wilmington, close to the Port of Long Beach and the Port of LA. It will feature a total charging capacity of five megawatts across up to 30 stalls. "This prime location is set to support the region's extensive drayage operations," stated the charge point operator. Funding for this project comes from the South Coast Air Quality Management District's Carl Moyer Programme, which contributed $2.3 million, and the Federal Highway Administration's programme aimed at reducing truck emissions at port facilities, which provided $1.8 million.

The second hub will be established in West Sacramento, Northern California, and will have a power capacity of one megawatt with space for as many as 100 charging stalls. This site is conveniently located near Interstate 5, which runs north to south through California, and Interstate 80, the second longest interstate in the United States, linking San Francisco with Teaneck, New Jersey.

Voltera has not disclosed the opening dates for these sites or the individual charging capabilities of the chargers.

"Acquiring these two sites in California marks a crucial advancement in our goal to facilitate the electrification of commercial fleets," remarked Sylvia Hendron, Voltera's Chief Development Officer. "Each location has been meticulously selected and developed to address the specific requirements of zero-emission vehicle fleets, including their proximity to essential transit routes and securing the necessary funding."

Recently, Voltera secured a $100 million debt facility from ING and Investec, in addition to ongoing equity backing from EQT, which is also an investor in the two upcoming California locations.

Voltera emphasizes its commitment to "developing, owning, and operating strategically placed, purpose-built charging facilities to support large-scale EV deployment and operation." Their infrastructure is designed for both electric cars and commercial vehicles, with both new hubs catering specifically to the latter.

In March, the company launched a truck charging hub in Lynwood, California, near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Developed in collaboration with Einride, this site can accommodate charging for up to 200 vehicles each day. Voltera is also a member of Powering America's Commercial Transportation (PACT), a lobbying organization established in early 2024 by Daimler Truck North America, Volvo Group, and Navistar, aimed at promoting charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles.

"The placement of charging infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty trucks is vital for a sustainable transition to clean energy in the trucking industry. Commercial fleets need reliable access to power along major freight corridors, along with adequate space for vehicle movement," stated Dawn Fenton, Chairperson of the PACT Board. "The initiatives led by PACT's charging developers are crucial for ensuring that medium- and heavy-duty trucks and fleets have the necessary power infrastructure to meet regulatory requirements. This work is essential for speeding up the electrification of transportation and indicates the demand for utility services."
