Toyota has officially become the eighth member of the fast-charging consortium Ionna, aimed at bolstering electric vehicle infrastructure across the United States and Canada.
Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, emphasized the strategic significance of joining forces with other automakers to establish robust fast-charging capabilities. "By partnering with Ionna, Toyota ensures that both Toyota and Lexus drivers will have widespread access to high-powered public charging, thereby enhancing confidence in electric vehicle technology and accelerating BEV adoption," Ogawa stated.
Initially formed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis in summer 2023, Ionna aims to deploy over 30,000 fast-charging points throughout North America. The alliance plans to inaugurate its first charging hubs in the US this summer, followed by expansions into Canada. While specific charging power details are forthcoming, all stations will feature CCS and NACS plugs to accommodate various electric vehicle models.
Seth Cutler, CEO of Ionna, expressed enthusiasm about Toyota's inclusion, highlighting shared goals for advancing electric mobility. "Welcoming Toyota to our growing Ionna family signifies a pivotal step in our collective mission to set new standards for quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction in EV charging," Cutler commented. The partnership marks a significant milestone in Ionna's efforts to drive sustainable transportation initiatives across North America.
Ionna secured antitrust approvals earlier this year and established its headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. The consortium also announced key leadership appointments in June to steer its strategic objectives forward.
In North America, Toyota currently offers the bZ4X and Lexus RZ as part of its battery-electric vehicle lineup. With plans to expand its BEV portfolio to include approximately 30 models by 2030, Toyota aims to manufacture at least two three-row electric SUVs at its facilities in Kentucky and Indiana.
