E.On and MAN have embarked on a significant initiative to deploy fast chargers for electric trucks at 170 locations across Europe, marking a pivotal step in advancing sustainable logistics and supporting green supply chains.
The collaboration aims to establish a robust public charging infrastructure tailored for heavy commercial vehicles, with a primary focus on enhancing emission targets and fostering sustainable transportation solutions. Of the 170 planned sites, approximately 125 will be strategically positioned in Germany, underscoring a concentrated effort to bolster the nation's charging capabilities. Additional locations are slated for Austria, the UK, Denmark, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, aligning with industrial hubs and major transportation corridors.
These charging stations will be integrated along MAN's existing service network, ensuring accessibility not only for MAN vehicles but also for other commercial vehicle brands. Designed for seamless operation, the sites will adopt a drive-through principle to accommodate long vehicles like trucks and buses without the need for complex maneuvering.
Initially equipped with 400 kW CCS fast chargers capable of delivering a 300-kilometer range in just 45 minutes, the network anticipates future scalability to the MCS megawatt charging standard. This transition aims to further enhance charging efficiency and accommodate evolving technological standards in the electric truck industry.
Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of E.On, emphasized the pivotal role of electromobility in achieving ambitious EU climate goals. "Electromobility is crucial to reducing CO2 emissions from heavy goods transport, and our joint initiative with MAN represents a substantial investment in building a robust charging infrastructure," stated Birnbaum. "This effort is a testament to our commitment to sustainable logistics and our vision for a greener future across Europe."
Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN, underscored the necessity for extensive political support to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure. "To meet the demand for approximately 50,000 charging points by 2030, we rely on strong partnerships and regulatory backing," Vlaskamp affirmed. "Our collaboration with E.On marks a critical milestone in advancing public charging networks, yet sustained governmental support is essential for widespread adoption."
The project underscores MAN's broader commitment to electric mobility, complementing initiatives like the Milence joint venture aimed at establishing 1,700 fast chargers for commercial vehicles across Europe. MAN's electric truck offerings, including the MAN eTruck and enhanced MAN Lion's City E bus, further reinforce its leadership in sustainable transportation solutions.
