Texas Opens First NEVI-Funded EV Charging Station
The state of Texas has unveiled its first EV charging station, funded through the U.S. National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, in the city of Happy. The station provides both CCS and NACS (J3400) connectors for charging.
The new site features four fast-charging units, each equipped with two connectors. While each charger can deliver up to 180 kW of power per port, only one car can be charged per station at a time, as there is only a single parking space available per charger. This setup allows for four cars to charge simultaneously at the location.
Funded through the NEVI program, up to 80% of the eligible project costs are covered for installing EV chargers along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. To qualify for funding, stations must be non-proprietary, support open-access payment methods, and be publicly accessible or available to authorized commercial motor vehicle operators.
Gabe Klein, executive director of the Joint Office, commented, "This new NEVI station will improve charging access in rural areas, support seamless EV travel along key routes, and enhance clean mobility options for rural communities. It's a significant step forward for long-distance EV travel, and we commend Texas for advancing its EV charging infrastructure."
As of December 31, 2023, Texas registered approximately 230,000 electric vehicles, making it the third-largest EV market in the U.S. following California and Florida.
In November, the Delaware General Assembly announced the receipt of $17.5 million in NEVI funding to develop a network of EV chargers along Route 13, Route 113, Route 1, and Interstate 95.
