DP World Implements Kempower Ultra-Fast Chargers at London Port
DP World, a leading global port operator, has introduced eight fully electric straddle carriers from Kalmar at its London Gateway terminal. These vehicles are now being charged at ultra-rapid speeds of 500A using high-speed chargers provided by Kempower.
In June 2023, DP World placed an order for eight electric Kalmar straddle carriers, equipped with high-energy batteries, for its London Gateway logistics hub. These electric carriers are now being supported by Kempower's fast-charging technology.
The collaboration between the Finnish companies Kalmar and Kempower sees the installation of these electric vehicles and chargers at the port's newly inaugurated fourth terminal, which opened in November after a £350 million investment. This terminal is notable for being the first in DP World's portfolio to operate entirely on electric vehicles, aligning with the company's goal to replicate this green initiative at other global terminals.
The £12 million Kalmar straddle carriers, which each weigh around 62 tonnes, require just 45 minutes to recharge from 0 to 100 percent using Kempower's high-speed chargers. Once fully charged, they can run for up to four hours. DP World has set a target to fully electrify its ports and terminals worldwide by 2050 and achieve net-zero emissions across its logistics operations.
Andrew Bowen, Chief Operating Officer for DP World UK, commented, "We are excited to collaborate with Kempower on this project, alongside Kalmar, our long-time partner. This marks a significant milestone in our efforts at London Gateway to transition our hybrid fleet into a fully electric one."
Kempower is providing DP World with Europe's first ultra-high-power 500A continuous charging system specifically designed for Kalmar's electric straddle carriers. The setup includes eight liquid-cooled charging satellites, eight 500 kW power units, and the Kempower ChargEye management system.
This project marks a major step for Kempower as it expands its high-power charging solutions into the maritime sector. Both DP World and Kempower are optimistic about the potential for future collaboration and broader expansion.
With around 80 terminals worldwide, DP World is a key partner for Kempower. In Dubai, at its Jebel Ali port, DP World is already making strides in the electrification of container flows, collaborating with Einride on the effort.
