Roadchef to Install 650 High-Power Charging Stations Across UK Motorways

Roadchef motorway service stations in the UK will soon see the addition of approximately 650 high-power charging stations as part of a large-scale infrastructure investment. The £20 billion initiative, spearheaded by financial services firm Macquarie, aims to enhance UK infrastructure, including renewable energy and transport solutions.
Macquarie, an investment banking and asset management group headquartered in Sydney, oversees Roadchef, which operates 21 service areas on UK motorways. The new charging stations will be installed in collaboration with various partners and will include some powered by solar energy. Additionally, trials for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) charging will take place at two major locations, with plans for 100 more parking spots for electric trucks. While Roadchef already has some charging facilities, many of these will undergo upgrades to meet modern standards.
"This investment in Roadchef is one of many contributions to UK infrastructure," said Shemara Wikramanayake, Macquarie Group's CEO. "We see infrastructure as foundational to economic growth, job creation, and stronger communities. Macquarie is committed to supporting the UK's development through this and future investments."
The Roadchef project is a part of Macquarie's broader £20 billion UK investment plan, targeting diverse areas such as renewable energy, transportation, digital infrastructure, and utilities. This package includes offshore wind farms, solar and battery storage facilities, distribution network modernization, and funding for the UK's first new reservoir in 30 years.
