Dublin Expands EV Charging Infrastructure in Public Car Parks

Dublin authorities are moving forward with plans to set up 200 electric vehicle charging stations across 50 council-owned parking areas, in partnership with ePower. The initiative, involving Dublin City, Fingal, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, and South Dublin Councils, aims to complete installations by early 2025.
The stations, which will be gradually activated over the next two years, are intended to support EV drivers who lack home charging options. This coordinated effort is designed to streamline infrastructure expansion, better allocate resources, and improve convenience for EV users. "This substantial investment will strengthen the EV charging network across Dublin, supporting our goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions," said Cllr Jim O'Leary, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. He emphasized that expanding public charging access will encourage more people to consider EVs as a practical choice for their next vehicle.
Dublin already leads Ireland in charging point availability, but the majority are private, and a shortage of public chargers has been recognized. Anticipating around 138,000 EVs on Dublin roads in the coming years, authorities estimate a quarter will depend on public charging. Furthermore, a benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax incentive for private chargers will be introduced next year.
Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, stated, "This rollout underscores our commitment to promoting EV adoption for the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. We're eager to see these essential charging stations put to use."
This project represents Dublin's first major expansion of public EV infrastructure since ESB introduced a pay-for-use model in early 2023. ESB also unveiled plans for 17 high-power charging hubs along Ireland's National Road Network, targeting 131 HPC installations by 2025. Additionally, a €21 million charging grant was introduced in February, aimed at encouraging the private sector to create public charging options within 3 km of motorway networks, including locations like hotels, service areas, and retail spaces.
