Cardiff Approves Installation of 100 EV Charging Stations

The Cardiff Council in Wales, UK, has approved the installation of 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations over the next two years, as part of the new 'Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap.'

According to the roadmap, the majority of the 100 charging points will provide up to 7kW of power, with some fast chargers offering 50 kW capabilities. While the Council will oversee the installation and operation of these chargers, a tender process will be initiated.

The initial rollout will prioritize areas with limited off-street parking. The targeted neighborhoods include Heath, Gabalfa, Cathays, Roath, Penylan, Adamsdown, Riverside, Canton, Grangetown, and Butetown.

"Many charging stations will be established commercially or by private homeowners who have off-street parking, but it is essential for us to provide charging options in areas where off-street parking is scarce-beginning with the deployment of an additional 100 charging stations in the next two years," stated Cllr Dan De'Ath, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning and Transport.

The Council aims to increase the number of public chargers in the region to between 600 and 700 by 2025/2026, rising from the approximately 200 publicly accessible EV charging points currently available. De'Ath also noted that with the growing trend of adopting electric vehicles, demand analysis indicates that Cardiff may require around 2,000 public charging sockets by 2030.
