Ionna to Install 50 EV Charging Stations at Sheetz Locations Across the U.S.

Ionna, a fast-charging joint venture launched by major automotive players like BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has announced a strategic partnership with the convenience store and restaurant chain Sheetz. The partnership aims to build 50 charging parks at Sheetz locations throughout the U.S. by 2026.

The first set of Ionna's "Rechargeries" will be installed in December 2024 at three Sheetz locations: Springfield and Willoughby in Ohio, and Scranton in Pennsylvania. These Rechargeries will feature multiple high-speed charging stations, each covered by red canopies to provide weather protection for EV drivers.

Sheetz currently operates over 750 stores in states like Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, and North Carolina, with plans to expand to 1,000 locations by 2028. As part of this partnership, the company intends to have 50 Rechargeries installed by the end of 2026. Additionally, Sheetz plans to launch special incentives and loyalty programs for customers using the EV chargers starting in 2025.

Known for its 24/7 operation, Sheetz offers made-to-order fast food and typically includes gas stations at most of its locations. Some Sheetz stores even feature full-service truck stops, complete with showers and laundromat facilities.

Trevor Walter, Executive Vice President of Petroleum Supply Management at Sheetz, emphasized the company's forward-thinking approach, stating, "Our mission is to continually evolve our business and offer innovative solutions. By enhancing our charging infrastructure, we aim to meet the growing demands of the electric vehicle market." He added that the collaboration with Ionna would bring advanced charging options to Sheetz customers, marking a significant step in offering future-ready services.

Founded in February 2024, Ionna had already announced its first project in the summer of 2023. In October 2024, construction began on its inaugural site in Apex, North Carolina. This Rechargery, located at a former gas station, will feature ten charging bays, offering up to 400 kW of power via CCS or NACS connectors. According to Ionna's shareholder, BMW, the site will also provide amenities like secure access to restrooms, coffee, food, and Wi-Fi for a comfortable experience while waiting for vehicles to charge. Additional outdoor and pet-friendly facilities will further enhance the convenience for visitors.

Through this partnership, Ionna and Sheetz are aiming to significantly expand EV charging access, paving the way for broader adoption of electric vehicles in the U.S.
