ABB Unveils Compact 50 kW Charger for Destination Charging
ABB E-mobility has introduced a new, compact charging solution, the C50, designed specifically for destination charging. With a depth of just 23.5 cm and a 21.5-inch touchscreen, the C50 offers a sleek and efficient way to power electric vehicles at retail and urban locations.
The C50 charger delivers up to 50 kW through dual connectors, making it suitable for the typical visitor dwell time of 60-90 minutes. ABB highlights that this design helps increase plug availability during peak times, optimizing throughput and efficiency for businesses that rely on high-volume charging. The company argues that while AC charging is too slow for meaningful use within an hour and DC charging can be too costly for retail environments, there is a crucial need for efficient charging solutions in public spaces like shopping centers, parking lots, and urban settings. As ABB CEO Michael Halbherr points out, "The EV revolution must extend beyond home charging – it needs to be accessible to everyone."
The C50 charger was created specifically to address these challenges, offering a slim and adaptable solution for locations such as retail spaces and urban centers. Its compact size facilitates easy installation, while the 50 kW power output makes it more compatible with grid integration than larger, high-powered chargers. ABB focused on overcoming key obstacles in destination charging, including mismatched power levels, operational inefficiencies, and subpar user experiences.
According to Halbherr, "Destinations need EV chargers that are functional, cost-effective, and seamlessly integrated into their existing operations. The C50 meets this need by replacing slow chargers with profitable fast-charging assets, and it fits smoothly into existing business models and customer routines." With flexible configurations and an out-of-the-box solution, the C50 allows destinations to gradually adopt EV charging, whether for low-traffic or high-demand areas.
This new addition complements ABB's existing range of chargers, which includes units with power levels up to 400 kW. In fact, ABB's first 400 kW charger was installed in Canada in late 2023. The company also partners with sports organizations, including Bayern Munich, Formula E, and NASCAR, to provide charging solutions for teams. Looking ahead, ABB is preparing to release even more powerful chargers, with a 700 kW prototype already tested on a MAN eTruck earlier in 2024.
