Volvo has launched its Plug&Charge feature for electric vehicles, debuting initially with the EX90 model. This innovation comes following a recent collaboration with Hubject, although the timeline for extending the functionality to other models remains unspecified.
The new Plug&Charge capability streamlines the charging process by enabling automatic initiation upon plugging in the charger, alongside seamless billing of charging costs. Customers of the EX90 must register with the Volvo Public Charging Service to utilize this feature, which was developed in partnership with Digital Charging Solutions (DCS).
Christian Hahn, CEO of Hubject, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "It is a clear commitment by Volvo Cars to make the EV charging experience convenient, easy and secure and to encourage more people to make the switch to electric." Alexander Petrofski, Head of Volvo Cars Energy Solutions, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Volvo's strategic goal to lead in the premium electric vehicle segment. He noted, "By next year already, we want 50% of our sales to be pure electric and 100% by 2030. Delivering hassle-free premium experience by removing perceived obstacles to EV ownership is central to our strategy and this partnership with Plug&Charge is a step in the right direction."
To enable Plug&Charge functionality in Volvo models, starting with the EX90, they will receive a 'V2G Root' certificate from Hubject. This technology ensures secure communication using the ISO15118-2 standard, enhancing reliability and safety during the charging process. Hubject specified that the ISO15118-2 protocol not only facilitates Plug&Charge but also promotes interoperability across different charging networks, ensuring a seamless user experience.
While the EX90 leads the rollout of Plug&Charge, Volvo plans to extend this feature to other all-electric models in its lineup. Specific timelines for this expansion were not disclosed in the press release, indicating ongoing developments in Volvo's commitment to enhancing EV usability and accessibility.
