eLumina, an Australian pioneer in EV solutions, is set to establish the country's inaugural factory dedicated to manufacturing Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The company has earmarked an investment of 20 million Australian dollars for this state-of-the-art plant.
Located in Yatala, a suburb on the Gold Coast in Queensland, eLumina's manufacturing facility is nearing completion. According to a report from InnovationAus.com, operations are slated to commence in August.
At the core of eLumina's production will be the D1 all-in-one ultra-fast charger, designed specifically for rural settings. This EV charger, requiring only 10-40 kW of input power, supports dual EV charging simultaneously and offers user-friendly tap-and-charge functionality. It is equipped with CCS2 and CHAdeMO connectors, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles.
The D1 charger incorporates a 193 kWh LFP battery, sourced from Chinese supplier CATL, enabling rapid charging capabilities of up to 160 kW. Lisa Marsh, co-founder and CEO of eLumina, disclosed that the cost of the D1 charger is set at AUD 250,000 (EUR 155,276), as reported by The Driven.
eLumina's new facility in Gold Coast is projected to produce 300 EV chargers annually. Looking forward, the company has ambitious plans to scale up operations significantly, with a planned expansion to a facility three times larger by 2027.
The initiative comes at a critical juncture for Australia's EV landscape, where despite a growing number of electric car owners, the country's fast-charging infrastructure remains underdeveloped. Currently, Australia boasts only 1,011 DC charging sites with 1,999 DC chargers, according to local EV data analyst Carloop. Marsh highlighted that Australia currently has one EV charger for every 35 electric cars, a stark contrast to other nations where the ratio is much lower, at one charger per ten electric cars.
eLumina aims to address these gaps by bolstering the local manufacturing of EV chargers, thereby contributing to the enhancement of Australia's EV charging infrastructure. Their locally-produced solutions are poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the rising demand for efficient and accessible charging options across the country.
