TotalEnergies has installed 100 fast charging points in Rotterdam
TotalEnergies intends to set up 100 fast-charging stations across approximately 15 to 20 sites in Rotterdam over the coming years. This initiative is part of the preparations for the city's zero-emission zone, which is set to be implemented next year.
The placement of these fast chargers will be coordinated with local authorities and potential users. Interested customers were invited to express their preferred charging locations through a web tool created by TotalEnergies.
These fast-charging stations are designed to enhance Rotterdam's existing charging infrastructure, enabling electric vehicle owners to quickly recharge and resume their journeys. Quirijn Oudshoorn, Project Manager for Charging Infrastructure at the Municipality of Rotterdam, stated, "Fast chargers will significantly contribute to Rotterdam's charging network, benefiting electric vehicle drivers. As the zero-emission zone is introduced and the number of electric cars increases, the demand for fast charging is on the rise. By 2025, we anticipate needing about 300 fast-charging points, and around 570 by 2030 for various user groups. We are making progress as a municipality, and this initiative is a positive step forward."

The newly installed fast chargers will primarily serve taxis, passenger vans, and logistics companies that will frequently operate within the zero-emission zone. One of the first locations to receive a fast charger is the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam. John Samshuijzen from the hospital remarked, "We began this project in early 2021 in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam. This initiative significantly supports the sustainable transport of our patients and visitors to and from Erasmus MC."
TotalEnergies currently operates around 18,000 charging points throughout the Netherlands. This extensive network is partly a result of the company's concessions for installing and managing up to 20,000 charging points in Noord-Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht since 2020. In 2021, they received a mandate for an additional 2,200 charging points in Amsterdam.
In both the Netherlands and Germany, TotalEnergies is focusing on its charging infrastructure and developing hydrogen solutions, having sold its network of petrol stations. This network was sold at the end of 2023 for €3.4 billion to the Canadian firm Couche-Tard, which has primarily been known for operating convenience stores. The petrol stations in these countries will continue to operate under the TotalEnergies name as long as they receive fuel from the company, which will be at least for the next five years.
