Philippines May Require EV Chargers at Gas Stations by 2025
The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) is working on new regulations that could mandate gasoline stations to install electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities starting in 2025. If approved, the law would require fuel stations to operate and maintain commercial-use charging stations on their premises.
Patrick Aquino, Director of the Energy Utilization Management Bureau (EUMB), has indicated that the draft guidelines will be introduced in the fourth quarter of 2024, with hopes to finalize and issue the mandate next year. "We aim to have the regulations in place after public consultations later this year or early next year," Aquino explained.
Details regarding the number of required charging units and specific implementation procedures are still being discussed. The DOE would have the authority to deny permits for new gasoline stations lacking sufficient space for charging infrastructure, according to the Philippine News Agency.
Aquino further clarified that the requirements might be based on the size of the fuel station. "For example, if a station has more than four pumps, we may require them to install at least one charger. However, smaller stations with only one pump might be exempt," he said.
In addition to this potential mandate, the DOE plans to release an updated 'Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry' this month, which outlines targets and activities to support the transition to electrified transportation in the Philippines.
Earlier this year, the Philippine government extended its EV import tax exemption until 2028, and in July, Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast opened its first showrooms in the country.
