Kontron Secures Significant Wallbox Order From Leading German Automaker

Augsburg-based technology firm Kontron has clinched a substantial contract worth 120 million euros for wallbox charging stations. The order, awarded by a prominent German automotive manufacturer, will be executed by Kontron's newly established subsidiary, eSystems.

The agreement involves the development and production of fully networked wallbox charging stations, with series production slated to commence in the third quarter of 2024 and continue through 2028. These wallboxes are tailored for deployment in both European and Chinese markets, featuring distinct designs suited to each region. According to Kontron, this initiative builds upon a longstanding partnership with the German automaker.

The new generation wallbox charging stations, powered by Kontron's ghostONE platform from eSystems, offer a customizable white-label solution. These advanced units are fully integrated with Ethernet, LTE, WiFi, EEBUS, MODBUS/TCP, OCPP, and ISO15118 connectivity, enabling what eSystems Managing Director Jochen Paukert describes as "smart charging next level." Beyond basic recharging, these wallboxes facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy into the grid, utilization of self-generated PV power, and cost savings through dynamic tariff adjustments. They also meet rigorous data security standards and receive updates remotely.

Kontron's acquisition of eSystems earlier this year, as part of its takeover of Munich-based Katek, positioned it strategically to win such contracts. This success follows another recent achievement where Kontron secured approval to supply smart charging systems valued at a minimum of 200 million euros in May.

Commenting on the significance of these developments, Kontron CEO Hannes Niederhauser emphasized, "These major contracts underscore the pivotal role of our 'smart charging' division, adding substantial value to our portfolio. With this latest project, we are further bolstering our growth in this forward-thinking sector."

Since 2017, Kontron has been under the ownership of Austrian firm S&T, with investment support from Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, marking a period of strategic expansion and technological innovation within the company.
