Understanding the RCD in AC EV Chargers

WHAT IS AN RCD?
An RCD, or residual current device, is an essential electrical safety device widely used to prevent electrical injuries or fatalities. It functions by rapidly disconnecting the live circuit when a human or animal comes into contact with it.
How Does an RCD Work?
In a balanced circuit, the current flows from the power source through a load (such as an EV charger) and back to the power source. The currents in the live and neutral wires are equal, keeping the RCD closed.
If a person uses a faulty EV Charger or cable and touches a live conductor, the current will flow through their body to the ground. This causes an imbalance between the current in the live conductor and the neutral conductor, as some current is diverted to the ground. The RCD detects this imbalance and quickly disconnects the circuit, thereby protecting the individual.
IEC 61851 STANDARD REQUEST FOR EV CHARGER RCDs?
The IEC 61851-1 standard of EV Charger, developed by the IEC technical committee, outlines general requirements for supplying electric energy to electric road vehicles and industrial trucks. According to IEC 61851-1, EV supply equipment (EV Charger) with a socket-outlet or vehicle connector for AC use (in line with IEC 62196) must have protective measures against DC fault current. The standard specifies that these measures should include:

* RCD Type A and appropriate equipment that ensures the disconnection of the supply in case of DC fault current above 6 mA.
