Off-board charger (EVSE- Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment)
An off-board charger is installed outside the electric vehicle and converts input AC current to DC current. There are two types of off-board chargers: AC chargers and DC chargers.
On-board charger (OBC)
An on-board charger is fixed within electric vehicles and converts single-phase AC (220V) or industrial three-phase AC (380V) into usable DC voltage for the vehicle's power batteries. It provides safe and automatic charging capabilities for electric vehicle batteries.
Electric Vehicles and AC Charging
Electric vehicles that support AC charging come equipped with an OBC. An AC charger supplies alternating current (AC) to the vehicle. The onboard charger then converts this AC power into direct current (DC), which is stored in the vehicle's battery.
For example, an AC charger for an electric vehicle connects to the car's charge port and provides AC power. The onboard charger within the car converts this AC power into DC power, which is then fed into the battery.

How a DC Charger Converts AC Input to DC Output
A DC EV charger uses AC input and outputs DC current. It can convert the input AC current to DC by itself and directly charge the battery, thanks to the AC to DC rectifier inside the DC charger cabinet.
For instance, in the case of a DC charger for an electric vehicle, the power bypasses the on-board charger, and the DC charger directly supplies power to the vehicle.
