TotalEnergies and SSE have unveiled their joint venture named 'Source,' aimed at accelerating electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the UK and Ireland. The partnership plans to deploy up to 3,000 EV chargers within the next five years, organized into 300 EV hubs strategically positioned in urban and surrounding areas. Initial construction for these hubs is already underway, although specific locations have not been disclosed.
All 'Source' hubs will operate on renewable energy sourced from SSE and TotalEnergies, offering charging capacities of 150 kW or higher. The ambitious initiative targets a 20% market share in the region, emphasizing convenient access and sustainability.
TotalEnergies brings extensive experience, having established the Source London network with 2,600 charge points and a global footprint of over 64,000 EV chargers. The company plans further expansion, aiming to set up more than 1,000 high-power charging sites across Europe by 2028, including operations in Germany and Spain.
SSE, renowned for its contributions to the UK and Ireland's energy transition, including major projects like the world's largest offshore wind farm, has already launched an ultra-rapid charging hub in Glasgow and plans a 35 million euro investment to install 30 high-power charging hubs in Ireland by 2026.
The establishment of the joint venture is contingent upon regulatory approval, marking a significant step towards enhancing sustainable transportation infrastructure in the UK and Ireland.
