Thailand Expands EV Charging Infrastructure
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is set to enhance the country's EV charging network by adding 110 new charging stations, reflecting its commitment to decarbonization and the growth of Thailand's electric vehicle ecosystem.

Aiming to establish itself as a frontrunner in the EV charging sector, EGAT plans to leverage its five decades of experience in electricity supply and transmission system development. This new initiative will increase the number of charging outlets from 211 at the end of last year, with aspirations to add an additional 100 stations by next year. Nissara Thammapala, EGAT's director for innovative energy solutions, stated that this expansion will strengthen the company's presence in the EV market, emphasizing that they view it as an untapped opportunity.
EGAT's commitment to expanding charging stations follows a report from Thailand's Department of Land Transport, which noted there are currently 141,008 battery electric vehicles in the nation. Additionally, the Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Energy Regulatory Commission are working on establishing standards for EV chargers, while the Engineering Institute of Thailand is preparing installation guidelines. Amid these advancements, EGAT is determined to play a pivotal role in Thailand's EV landscape. Beyond the new charging stations, the company offers a smartphone app to manage waiting times at charging locations and provides expert consultation on charging infrastructure. Recently, EGAT also showcased its EV charging solutions at the Bangkok EV Expo 2024.
This initiative by EGAT underscores its strategy to enhance its EV solution offerings in response to competition from established players in the market.
