Nissan USA Approves Fermata Bidirectional Charger for Nissan Leaf
Nissan USA has officially approved Fermata Energy's next-generation FE-20 bidirectional charger for use with the Nissan Leaf, marking a key development in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.
Fermata Energy, a leader in V2G services, announced that its FE-20 charger has received UL and CHAdeMO certifications, along with passing essential Nissan standards. This approval follows Fermata's previous success with the FE-15, which was the first serially produced bidirectional charger for the Nissan Leaf in the U.S. in 2022.
V2G technology allows electric vehicles to send energy back to power grids or homes, helping to stabilize energy systems and generate income for owners. It also provides benefits like emergency power during outages. As electric vehicle adoption rises in the U.S., more companies are offering bidirectional charging solutions. Fermata's first FE-15 model reportedly reduced electricity bills by more than $9,450 over four years in trials at Nissan's headquarters in Tennessee.
Kent O'Hara, president of Nissan's 4R battery business, noted that the FE-20 enhances the bidirectional charging capabilities of the Nissan Leaf, offering significant energy cost savings for fleet customers. Additionally, Fermata has assured Nissan owners that using the FE-20 and its V2X software will not affect the vehicle's warranty.
In a related development, the California Energy Commission awarded BorgWarner, Fermata Energy, and Lion Electric a $3 million grant earlier this year. The project aims to use electric school buses' batteries to support the grid during emergencies and generate revenue through demand response programs, ultimately reducing vehicle ownership costs.
