Plymouth to Enhance Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Los Angeles Expands Curbside EV Charging Using Streetlight Poles

The city of Plymouth is set to increase its electric vehicle (EV) charging capabilities. The Council will utilize £2.415 million from the government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund for this initiative.

As part of the new charging strategy, two major projects are being introduced. To facilitate on-street charging, 100 pavement channels will be constructed, allowing residents to connect cables from their homes to a power source. This is a first for Plymouth and will be trialed.

For residents without the option of parking directly in front of their homes, the Council plans to install 600 pedestals and/or 7kW flush-mounted chargers, which will serve up to 1,200 charging bays. These publicly accessible chargers will be located on streets and in parking areas where off-street parking is unavailable.

"Electric vehicles are essential for our future mobility, and it's encouraging to see the city taking steps to implement this," said Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport. He noted, "We currently have over 300 EV charging bays in the city, but we need to enhance convenience for residents looking to charge their electric vehicles near their homes."
