California Grants Funding for UCLA's EV Charging Infrastructure
UCLA Events and Transportation has secured a significant investment from the California State Transportation Agency's Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program. The funds are earmarked to enhance electrified public transport and its supporting infrastructure.
The University of California, Los Angeles, along with CALSTART, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing clean transportation, and wireless charging innovator Electreon, has been awarded a $19.85 million grant. The partnership aims to electrify UCLA's BruinBus fleet, expand its services, and implement California's first in-road wireless electric charging system. The project is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"This transformative funding will allow us to significantly improve our transportation network, making the BruinBus fleet cleaner and more efficient, in line with our commitment to sustainability and technological advancement," said Tony Lucas, executive director of UCLA Events and Transportation.
Clinton Bench, director of UCLA Fleet and Transit, added, "This new transit hub and expansion will revolutionize connectivity in Westwood, making it easier to travel between UCLA and key locations across Los Angeles. As the city prepares to host the Olympics, this development will support a more integrated and accessible urban environment."
Electreon is already involved in multiple inductive charging projects worldwide, including collaborations with UPS in Detroit, as well as projects in Israel and Coventry. Their first project of this kind was launched in Sweden in 2019.
