Basic Information

Almost every electric vehicle sold in Europe is equipped with a Type 2 Iec 62196 Socket. This Type 2 electric vehicle charging socket is designed with 7 holes, compatible with single-phase AC charging and three-phase AC charging.

The 7 holes of the Type 2 Iec 62196 Socket are: L1, L2, L3, N, PE, CP, and PP:
L1, L2, L3: These usually represent the various phases of a three-phase power supply, namely phase A, phase B, and phase C. In a three-phase power system, these three wires (L1, L2, L3) jointly provide power to ensure the normal operation of equipment. For single-phase charging, only L1 will work.

N: Representing the neutral line, in an AC circuit, the neutral line (N) is connected to one side of the power supply, forming an essential part of the current loop.

PE stands for protective grounding wire, whose main function is to provide electrical safety protection.

PP and CP are signal terminals used for signal communication between electric vehicles and charging stations, managing charging current, etc

How to Safely Disconnect an Electric Charger from a Type 2 Iec 62196 Socket?

Many electric vehicles are equipped with a release button for the charging cable, which can typically be found on the cable itself, within the vehicle, or on the connector. Press this button to disengage the locking mechanism, allowing you to carefully remove the connector from the Type 2 Iec 62196 Socket.

After you've removed the charger, it's important to store it properly. If you're at a public charging station, return the cable to its holder. For home chargers, coil the cable neatly and keep it in a secure, dry place.

Don't forget to close the charging port flap or cover after disconnecting the charger. This helps protect the port and prolong the life of your EV.

If you continue to experience difficulties, check the specific instructions for your vehicle brand.

What can you do if your EV charging socket won't unlock?

If you're having trouble unlocking your Iec 62196 Socket, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Reset the Vehicle's Systems

Turn off your EV completely, exit the vehicle, and lock it with the key fob. After a few minutes, unlock the vehicle and restart it. This process can reset the vehicle's systems and may resolve any issues with the charging port.

Check the Key Fob Battery

Ensure that the key fob battery isn't depleted if it's used to unlock the charging port. Replace the battery if necessary and attempt to unlock the port again.

Consult the Owner's Manual

Refer to your EV's owner's manual for specific troubleshooting advice. If the issue persists, contact your car dealership or the EV manufacturer for professional diagnosis and repair options.
