Charging Speed and Power Levels: J1772 Type 1 vs. CCS1

Both the SAE J1772 and the Combined Charging System (CCS) standards support EV charging, but they differ in power levels, which results in varying charging speeds.

 

SAE J1772 Standard

The J1772 Type 1 standard covers Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Level 1 charging, at the lower end of the power scale, provides up to 1.9 kW and uses a standard 120V AC outlet, like those found in most U.S. homes. While this method is relatively slow-adding only 2-5 miles of range per hour-it is convenient because it requires no special infrastructure.

Level 2 charging, however, uses a 240V supply, similar to what is used by large home appliances like dryers. It can deliver up to 19.2 kW, significantly increasing charging speed. Depending on the vehicle and charger power, Level 2 can add 10-60 miles of range per hour.

The actual charging speed depends on factors such as the charger's power rating, the vehicle's onboard charger, and how quickly the vehicle can accept power.

 

CCS Standard

CCS1 supports both slow AC and high-power DC fast charging. Its AC charging capabilities are similar to those of the J1772 standard, covering both Level 1 and Level 2 charging.

Where CCS1 truly excels is in its ability to manage DC fast charging, with power levels reaching up to 350 kW. This capability is vastly superior to Level 2 AC charging, allowing a DC fast charger to add 60-100 miles of range in about 20 minutes for most vehicles.

DC fast charging with CCS1 is transformative for EV users, offering much quicker recharge times and making long-distance travel more practical. This feature helps address one of the key challenges in EV adoption-charging time.

However, it's important to note that charging speed is influenced by three key factors: the charger's power rating, the car's onboard charging technology, and the battery capacity. While not all EVs can currently utilize the full 350 kW, this capability paves the way for future advancements in EV technology.
