About GBT and TYPE2:

 

The IEC 62196 Type 2 connector is used for charging electric cars, mainly within Europe. The connector is

circular in shape, with a flattened top edge.

 

The IEC 62196 Type 2 connector, commonly known as "Type 2" or by the name "Mennekes" (after the company that created it), is a standard electric vehicle charging plug used predominantly in Europe and many other regions globally. This connector is distinguished by its circular design with a flat edge on top and is intended for charging electric vehicles using alternating current (AC), supporting both single-phase and three-phase power.

Initially designed to charge electric vehicles with power ranging from 3 to 50 kW, Tesla has modified the Type 2 plug to enable it to deliver up to 150 kW using direct current (DC). This version includes a locking mechanism that secures the plug during charging, preventing any interruptions or accidental disconnections.

 

Although the Type 2 connector is primarily used in Europe, it has also been adopted in countries like New Zealand. In Tesla's European Supercharger network, this connector (up to Version 2) was capable of delivering 150 kW of DC power using two specific pins. However, from 2019 onward, Tesla has transitioned to the CCS2 connector for the Model 3 and Model Y in Europe with the introduction of the V3 Supercharger.

 

The Guobiao standard GB/T 20234 for AC / DC charging within China. And now it is also easy to find in the

Asia market, especially the countries near China.

 

China also uses the same physical connector for AC charging, but there are male and female differences in the vehicle and EVSE, according to the national standard GB/T 20234.2-2015. GB/T 20234-2 specifies a cable with Type 2 male connectors on both ends and female inlet on the vehicle, as opposed to the male and female inlet in the rest of the world, with different control signals.

 

The Type 2 and GBT connectors (plug & socket) are all 7 pins and looks similar, so many new EV owner may can't recognize GBT and Type2 correct. Find the difference in following pictures:
