General overview of the different types of connectors
The speed at which an electric vehicle (EV) charges using AC power is influenced by three key factors: the charging station that supplies the electricity, the charging cable, and the vehicle's onboard charger.

J1772 - Type 1
In 2001, California introduced a square-shaped connector called J1772, which was limited to 6.6 kW of power. In response to the need for faster charging, Yazaki developed a more powerful version in 2008, capable of delivering 19.2 kW. Since 2010, this updated design has become the standard for all American vehicles and is often referred to as the J-plug or Type 1 connector.
Initially, European electric vehicles also utilized this connector, so many older or hybrid models still feature Type 1. However, since EV drivers typically carry their own charging cables, charging at any AC station remains convenient. Today, Type 1 is primarily used in North America and Asia. A notable drawback of this connector is that it supports only single-phase charging and lacks an integrated automatic locking mechanism.
Mennekes - Type 2
European electric vehicles originally used the Type 1 connector until European automakers sought a solution that could leverage all three phases of power. This led to the creation of new specifications under IEC 62196 in 2003, which resulted in the development of the Type 2 "Mennekes" connector. It quickly became the standard across Europe. The advantage of both Type 1 and Type 2 connectors using the same J1772 signaling protocol is that manufacturers can produce vehicles uniformly and only install the appropriate plug type for the specific market at the final stage of production. Additionally, passive adapters are available between these types. Another key benefit of the Type 2 connector is its built-in automatic locking system.
(The Type 2 connector is often referred to as Mennekes, named after the German company that designed it. The term "Mennekes design" has since become widely recognized.)
The Tesla Model S and Model X sold in Europe are also equipped with a slightly modified Type 2 connector. This allows them to charge at any AC station and to use the Tesla Supercharger network for DC fast charging.
GB/T Standard
In China, the GB/T connector was developed under the guidance of the Guobiao Standardization Commission and is now the sole connector used across the country. The lack of competing connector types simplifies the expansion of the charging infrastructure. China currently boasts the densest network of charging stations globally and the highest number of electric vehicles on the road.
At first glance, the GB/T connector resembles the Type 2, but the internal wiring is arranged in reverse order, rendering the two connectors incompatible.
